In a separate post, I raved about how easy it is to get the DPR-1260 working with OSX. Here I'll list the steps you need to go through to make it work. I'm using Leopard (OSX 10.5.1) so all the screen references are specific to that version of the OS. Tiger (10.4) is similar enough that it should be easy to figure out what I'm talking about, and I did get this working under Tiger initially.
Note that I don't describe how to set up the wireless networking part of this print server because I have it connected to a wireless router that gives all computers on my network access to the print server. If you need the print server's wireless functions enabled, follow the instructions in the manual after you've completed the steps below.
- Connect the print server to your network using a cable (not wirelessly)
- Plug your USB printer into one of the print server's USB ports
- In your browser, connect to the print server's default IP address (see the manual)
- Optional -> Click on "Setup", then "Network Settings". In this screen, titled "Network Setup", change the settings in the Network Settings box to whatever you want for your network
- You should write down a couple of pieces of information from the default screen, which is titled "Device Info". Make a note of the "IP Address", which appears under "Identification" and the "LPR Queue Name", which appears under "Attached Devices"
- On your Mac, open the Print & Fax control panel (click the Apple menu, then "System preferences...", then "Print & Fax")
- Click on the + button. A new window will open, with icons labeled Default, Fax, IP, Windows, etc. at the top. Click on "IP"
- Protocol should be set to "Line Print Daemon - LPD"
- The Address should be whatever IP address you wrote down in step 5
- The Queue should be set to the LPR Queue Name you wrote down in step 5. The queue name will most-likely be the model number of your printer; that was the default for me, at least. I'm using a Brother MFC-6800, so the queue name is "MFC-6800"
- In the Name box, type whatever name you want to give the printer, and do the same in the Location box
- Now select the printer model using the drop-down box
- Click "Add"
You should be done! To check that all looks good, select the printer you just created in the "Printers" panel of the "Print & Fax" window. Now click "Options & Supplies...". At the bottom of the window that appears, you should see something like "URL: lpd://<IP address you entered>/<queue name you entered>". If so, you can send a test page to the printer and see what happens. Good luck!
