Goldfrapp: We Are Glitter
Goldfrapp's analog to PSB's "Disco", and just as enjoyable. (****)
Pet Shop Boys: Fundamental
Their best production since "Introspective" and almost a complete return-to-form. "I'm With Stupid" and "Integral" light up the floor in front of your stereo, while "The Sodom and Gomorrah Show" recalls the best Frankie Goes To Hollywood moments. Meanwhile, "Casanova In Hell" will transport you to secret chambers where dark deeds receive warm laughs. Fantastic. (*****)
Jim Haner: Soccerhead: An Accidental Journey into the Heart of the American Game
A fantastic odyssey through the history of American soccer, from the bright beginnings of immigrant-fueled company teams, through the glitz of the Pele/Best/Cryuff NASL era, the blackout of baseball and American football dominance, to today's resurgence at the feet of rabid, soccer-mad kids and the MLS. (*****)
A.A. Gill: The Angry Island: Hunting the English
A.A. Gill is perhaps the angriest Englishman-in-denial that I've ever read. Methinks the critic doth protest too much, which just makes it a whole lot funnier.
Eduardo Galeano: Soccer in Sun and Shadow, New Edition
South American-centric history of soccer, written in bite-sized chunks that are perfect for snacking on throughout the day. (****)
